He is a Pritzker Prize winner and one of the most famous Danish architects of the 20th century. He was a ‘Nordic-based globalist’ whose masterful use of different cultures and histories from around the world inspired future generations of architects to travel the world and challenge themselves.
J·rn Utzon made a splash with the Sydney Opera House. This beautiful building shell shone so brightly that Louis Cohn praised it as “the sun does not know how beautiful it is until it shines on it.”

But J·rn Utzon’s legacy extends far beyond the Sydney Opera House, with many of his modernist masterpieces standing in his native Denmark. For example, The Bagsvaerd Church.

J·rn Utzon describes himself, “The inspiration for the church came from a wonderful visit – not one, but several – to a vast sandy beach on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The beach was on the windward side, and the trade winds from California were blowing like a steady breeze a few kilometers above the sea. From early morning until eleven o’clock, the wind builds up, and you can lean into it – otherwise, you don’t know the calm the wind brings. Sometimes it brings some clouds, and then the light and the sun fall through the clouds onto the sand.”
Therefore, the Bagguswade Church can be seen as a beautiful space made up of “drifting clouds on the sea and the shore.” Light falls through the ceiling – representing the clouds – onto the floor, representing the sea and the shore.
